Here at Vertical Aerospace, we are on a journey to deliver our 1st aircraft into service by 2028. This requires us to develop our battery to be produced in-house. To achieve this, we need to develop our existing team and add to the skill set we have.

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Advanced Manufacturing Engineer with a strong passion for leveraging automated assembly and design for assembly (DFA). In this role, you will play a crucial part in driving the battery development and production assembly equipment.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Lead manufacturing engineering to ensure design for manufacturing is embedded into the design for battery assembly.
  2. Identify potential assembly issues and risks, analyzing product designs to identify potential problems during assembly, such as difficult part access, complex alignments, and the need for specialized tools or fixtures.
  3. Define a method of capturing and scoring issues and risks.
  4. Input design modifications based on your analysis of the design to simplify assembly, reduce the number of parts, and improve the overall manufacturability of the product.
  5. Input into equipment and fixturing design to aid in assembly.
  6. Develop assembly processes and procedures, working closely with production teams to develop efficient assembly processes, including selecting appropriate tools, fixtures, and equipment, and defining the sequence of assembly operations.
  7. Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness by producing assembly costs for the battery pack, considering factors such as labor, materials, and tooling.
  8. Implement and monitor assembly processes into development and production, overseeing the implementation of the assembly processes ensuring that they are followed correctly, and that the product meets quality standards.
  9. Monitor assembly performance and identify areas for improvement.
  10. Actively participate in Design for Assembly, ensuring that products are not only functional and meet specifications but are also manufacturable and cost-effective.
  11. Design assembly process equipment using PFMEA.

The successful candidate will have the following Experience & Qualifications:

  1. Strong background in high volume final assembly and lean manufacturing principles with relevant experience in new product introduction (NPI).
  2. Experience in manufacturing assembly both automated and manual, ideally of a battery such as those in electric vehicles.
  3. Experience in automotive, aerospace, or other associated industries is desired.
  4. Be a team player and great communicator at all levels of the organization.
  5. A career background in aerospace or automotive manufacturing engineering or advanced manufacturing would be particularly advantageous, together with an interest in green technology and/or aviation.
  6. Degree or suitable experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
  7. Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
  8. Proven manufacturing engineering experience in taking a product from prototype through to volume production (NPI).
  9. Expertise in manufacturing engineering and production systems, ideally within the aerospace or automotive industry.
  10. Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and certifications related to aerospace manufacturing and quality management systems is desirable.
  11. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams, external suppliers, and stakeholders.
  12. Analytical mindset, with a data-driven approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  13. Ability to thrive in a dynamic startup environment with a high degree of ambiguity and uncertainty, and a willingness to roll up sleeves and get things done.
  14. IT skills and experience of CAD and 3DX would be a benefit.

Compliance:

  1. In line with your contract of employment, you will comply with any of Vertical's rules, policies and procedures in force. Copies of the policies are available on the intranet.
  2. As an employee of Vertical Aerospace, you are required to report any safety concerns, however minor, either through your People leader or using the confidential reporting systems that Vertical Aerospace has in place. You are to remain up to date with all of the relevant Safety training that Vertical Aerospace promulgates.

Our benefits:

  1. 26 days holiday, plus bank holiday.
  2. 5 extra days per year to buy (or sell).
  3. 5 extra days holiday when you get married or enter a civil partnership.
  4. Additional 4% of your salary to spend on extra benefits.
  5. Award-winning digital health and wellbeing service (Help@Hand).
  6. Company Share Scheme - open to every Vertical employee.
  7. Company Pension Scheme - 5% and we match it.
  8. Breakfast on us, every day.

We may just be the hardest job you've ever had, but we're confident it will be the most rewarding. Join the team today and help us shape the future of Advanced Air Mobility.
