Experimental Test Strategy Engineer

The Experimental Engineering team own the strategy for all Experimental Verification and Validation capability within the business (supporting in-service boats through to future boat projects and new technologies being investigated). We are looking for a proactive individual to join the test capability and strategy area to ensure the test capabilities and test facilities at Rolls-Royce Submarines and externally (academia and the supply chain) meet the Rolls-Royce Submarines' test data needs today and for the future.

The scope of the Experimental Test Strategy Engineer role includes investigating and determining (alongside technical customers) what data is needed, how it can be gathered, and where it should be generated. As a central cross-project role, the Experimental Test Strategy Engineer has unique visibility of how multiple different project demands can be optimally delivered individually or collectively. In turn, they steer/deploy the testing and measurement technology we have available today and where we ought to invest in developing these capabilities for the future.

What you will be doing

As an Experimental Test Strategy Engineer your primary responsibilities will include:
Developing, implementing, and managing long term roadmaps for specific areas (including thermal hydraulic, high-fidelity measurement, acoustic, component, shock, materials and secondary propulsion testing) and for both new and existing test facilities, including their delivery.Integrating with key capability areas across the business to ensure the testing roadmaps provide the necessary test capability today and, in the future, to service the business testing needs. Including test, measurement, and data capabilities.Act as the point of contact for incoming test requests from across the business, undertaking the initial key stakeholder engagement and requirements and ensuring it is integrated into the right area of Technical Development.Generate the initial principal testing solution. Including capturing key testing requirements, owning the first stage of the test data acquisition tube map, shaping the key testing requirements, and leading the development and endorsement of the main testing options.Engage with the broader Experimental Engineering Team, as well as rig operators and technicians in our on-site engineering laboratory to deliver a suite of experimental testing programmes as required.Engage with external organisations and in research projects at our University Technology Centres, particularly in relation to fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and novel experimental measurement techniques.

To be successful in this role, the following experience is desirable:
Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering or science-based subject.Experience of strategy and capability development and its implementation.Experience of conducting experimental testing to support technical development or V&V, relevant to engineering.Understanding measurement techniques, methods and accuracies.Understanding of the Submarine Enterprise and the role of test programmes within the V&V of our products.Good interpersonal, time management and problem-solving skills.Ability to work to Rolls-Royce company processes in order to ensure quality of output; and to Health, Safety and Environmental rules and legislation.
