The ocean is critical to life on our blue planet.Understanding how it is changing has never been more important. Inorder to understand these changes, SAMS is expanding its scienceteam and strengthening research in physical oceanography and marinebiogeochemistry. Research in these areas is crucial to ourunderstanding of climate change, weather patterns and marineecosystems. SAMS is a leading institute in climate-scale oceanresearch and recently hosted the Challenger Society Marine ScienceConference. Situated on the west coast of Scotland, SAMS is locatedon the doorstep of the north-east Atlantic and is a leader inlarge-scale monitoring arrays and harnessing autonomous platforms.New members of the team will help us chart the direction of ourresearch, ensuring we can answer the most pressing questions inocean science. Come and join us! The Role We are seeking a talentedpostdoctoral physical oceanographer to harness observational, numerical and theoretical methods to advance our understanding ofclimate-relevant ocean physics in the North Atlantic. Thepostholder will contribute to NERC-funded research programmes, using autonomous observational platforms and sophisticated physicalanalysis to investigate the dynamics and impacts of oceancirculation in the North Atlantic: - ODISSEA - utilise hydrographicmooring, bottom pressure, glider, satellite, and tide gauge data tounderstand the causal relationships between climate-scale oceancirculation and coastal/shelf sea level around the UK and Irelandon a range of time scales. - OSNAP - provide a continuousobservational record of the volume heat, freshwater fluxes in theeastern subpolar North Atlantic, improving our understandingsubpolar AMOC variability and dynamics. - WISPA - developtechniques for using of drift-free bottom pressure sensors toobserve climate-relevant ocean dynamics. More information on theOSNAP project can be found here: OSNAP | Overturning in theSubpolar North Atlantic Program (o-snap.org) Our Ideal CandidateYou will hold a PhD in physical oceanography and be experienced inusing traditional and/or autonomous observing methods, the datathey generate and computing languages to analyse these data. Youwill have experience participating in oceanographic researchcruises, have a good understanding of ocean boundary dynamics and apublication record which demonstrates this. You will also have atrack record of identifying research opportunities and incomegeneration. Ability to work effectively at sea is also essential.Employee Benefits Our relatively small, caring community, is anideal environment for making friends, forming collaborations, andsupporting each other to do the work that we really care about.Oban and surrounding areas provide a fantastic base to live andwork, and we offer a wide range of employee benefits, support andinclusive culture, making SAMS a great place to work.
