Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Bedfordshire - Stress and precision engineering

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer / Senior Designer to join a well-established engineering R&D company based in Bedfordshire. The company is focusing on developing brand new disruptive technology which are helping to revolutionise high precision engineering companies in industries such as Aerospace, Space, Defence, Automotive, etc. They are now looking for an outstanding Senior Mechanical Engineer with knowledge of modern manufacturing techniques and excellent attention to detail to be involved in development, support the planning, manufacturing and testing of a range of high precision designs.

Due to the nature of the work the successful candidate will need to satisfy security clearance requirements including the last 5 years continual UK residency.

Senior Mechanical Engineer's Responsibilities:

  1. Hands-on Mechanical Design of precision assemblies and testing
  2. Conducting load and stress calculations, material selection
  3. Creation of detailed 3D models and drawings suitable for manufacturing
  4. Design for manufacture (inc. 5-axis machining, instrumentation and sensor requirements) and implementation of continuous improvement
  5. Mentor and support less experienced engineers
  6. Preparing project documentation, working within budget and to project schedule, observe quality standards and H&S procedures, engineering reviews.

Senior Mechanical Engineer's Requirements:

  1. Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  2. At least 5 years of recent and relevant experience in mechanical design within a R&D environment
  3. Extensive knowledge of GD&T, FEA, DFMEA and stress calculation
  4. Extensive experience in 2D and 3D CAD systems, preferably CATIA V5.
  5. Experience in load and stress calculations, tolerance analysis, material specification, testing.
  6. Good understanding of 6 Sigma, 5S and Lean manufacturing techniques, experience in design for manufacturing
  7. Aerospace or aerodynamic application experience is desirable.
  8. Project management experience using tools and methodologies, understanding of MRP systems.
  9. Experience in line management and ability to support more junior engineers and technical staff.
  10. Strong problem solving and excellent time management skills, excellent communication skills.

Location: Bedfordshire (commutable from Bedford, St. Neots, Luton, Royston, Milton Keynes, Cambridge etc.)
