Job summary

This is a whole-time fixed term post for an initial period of 12 months with an option to extend for a further 12 months, with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

A medical degree from a recognised UK or overseas university is essential. Candidates should have prior training in Ophthalmology and experience in research . Prior experience in Ocular Oncology is desirable.

The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

Applicants should be ST5-ST7 or equivalent at the time of interview.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The appointee would be expected to make use of the ample opportunities in research, service evaluation and audit. He/ she will be encouraged to present at regional, national and international meetings.

The appointee will gain experience in all aspects of ophthalmic oncology including diagnosing and managing adult intraocular, ocular surface, periocular and orbital tumours.

This Fellowship is the only one of its kind in England providing comprehensive training in all aspects of adult ophthalmic oncology. It is an exciting opportunity to work with four highly specialised Consultant Ophthalmologists with their own sub-speciality interests covering the full range of eye cancer patients.

The post holder will be working at the internationally reputed Sheffield Ocular Oncology Service and Department of Ophthalmology, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, part of the Sheffield Teaching at Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will provide intermediate grade support to the Consultant Ophthalmologists appropriate to his/her level of experience. The appointee would also be expected to play a full part in the clinical and basic science research, clinical, teaching and governance activities of the department.

Qualifications

Essential

Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise at point of application Diploma/ Membership in Ophthalmology or equivalent basic qualification in Ophthalmology

Desirable

BSc, MSc/MD or other visual science qualification Distinctions, Prizes, awards or scholarships.

Clinical Experience

Essential

ST5-ST7 Level or equivalent experience

Desirable

Previous surgical experience in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery. Fellowship level experience in Oculoplastic surgery Previous exposure to orbital surgery/ MDT approach to cases Previous exposure to or awareness of ocular oncology procedures Ability to run independent general clinics if required Ability to be 1st on call if required

Research

Essential

Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate

Desirable

Publications in Peer reviewed journals Poster or Oral Presentation in oculoplastics/ ocular oncology at national/ international meeting such as RCOphth/ BOPSS/ AAO/ ISOO Previous research experience

Teaching and Training

Essential

Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors Experience in supervising ophthalmology trainees in minor oculoplastic procedures

Continuous Professional Development

Essential

Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

Desirable

Maintenance of a CPD dairy or portfolio
