Filter Engineer – Smiths Interconnect – Remote (Site in Dundee)


Technical lead of Design and Applications Engineering of new filter and filter based multi-functional products through entire developmental cycle. Also, takes the lead engineering role on larger and more technically challenging transformation and next generation development projects.

This role will be remote based, with travel to our Dundee site every so often.


The key responsibilities for the role are as follows –


  • Oversee passive RF/Microwave filter product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards and customer requirements, and related specifications.
  • Ability to monitor progress of projects, confer with engineers, and review status to see that development is progressing according to schedule.
  • Check / sign off on Design Engineering drawings and mentor / coach.
  • Detailed Design Review – such as tolerance studies, FMEA, DFM, FEA.
  • Concept Development – correct interpretation of customer specifications and requirements enabling generation of technical proposals.
  • Research and Development – to explore new technologies appropriate for continual development
  • Sales Support – to provide advanced technical assistance to the sales activity to win new business and support existing business.
  • Technical Support – providing specialized technical assistance to the global operations teams, sub-contractors and suppliers.
  • Technical Administration – to create and maintain design information to ISO standards.
  • Develops technology and process know-how to ensure designs are technologically competitive.
  • Participate and contribute to team training, development, mentoring and audits.
  • Demonstrate behaviours consistent with company policies.


The ideal candidate will have the following skills/experience –


  • Design expertise in suspended substrate, micro-strip and high-power lumped element (aka. Discrete) filter, multiplexer and multi-functional assembly topologies ·
  • Design expertise in machined cavity and waveguide filter topologies ·
  • Essential: Proficient in the use of EDA design software such as ANSYS HFSS, CST, Keysight & AWR tools
  • Power handling analysis and mitigation techniques including RF and thermal effects. · Proven hands-on filter development experience using vector network analyzers and high power test equipment to realize filter designs
  • Uses skills to contribute to development of company objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative & effective ways.
  • Applies advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Viewed as expert within the company and by our customers.
  • Competent in the use of advanced Finite Element Analyses techniques.
  • Expert in the application of the product and how the performance effects the overall system operation.
  • Competent in use of 3D and 2D design tools.
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, moulding and assembly

techniques.

  • Expert knowledge of MIL-Spec and other Space/Defence/Aerospace/Medical industry specifications.
  • Ability to perform Root Cause Analysis utilizing standard problem-solving tools and methodologies.
