Safety & Environmental Compliance Engineer

Location: Portsmouth, Hampshire (Hybrid – 3 days on-site)
Contract: 6 months (likely extension)
Rates: Up to £70 an hour (Inside IR35 via umbrella) 

Security Clearance: SC required prior to start

Overview

We’re seeking an experienced Safety & Environmental Compliance Engineer to join a leading defence and communications engineering organisation in Portsmouth.

This role plays a pivotal part in ensuring Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory Compliance across multiple engineering projects — supporting delivery through the full lifecycle and ensuring all programmes meet MOD and EU standards.

You’ll work closely with multi-disciplinary project teams, providing technical leadership, regulatory oversight, and clear safety guidance within a complex engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain Safety and Environmental Management Plans (SEMP) and Safety & Environmental Cases (SECR) in accordance with UK MOD processes.
Chair and coordinate Safety & Environmental Committee meetings (internal and external).
Support product compliance with EU Directives, including the creation of technical files and Declarations of Conformity.
Undertake and facilitate Safety and Environmental analyses across engineering projects.
Provide technical advice and act as a focal point for Safety, Environmental, and Product Regulatory matters.Skills & Experience Required
Solid understanding of UK MOD Safety and Environmental Management frameworks (ASEMS, DEF STAN 00-056, DEF STAN 00-51, POSMS, POEMS).
Working knowledge of UK/EU Safety and Environmental Product Regulatory Compliance legislation.
Proven experience producing and maintaining Safety & Environmental documentation for complex systems.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Background in defence, aerospace, or communications engineering preferred.
Knowledge of military satellite communications (particularly maritime domain) advantageous but not essential.Interested?
