System Safety Engineer
The opportunity:

  • Are you an experienced System Safety Engineer looking to apply your skills in a new and complex problem domain?
  • Or are you an experienced Systems Engineer looking to broaden your safety experience of the engineering lifecycle?
  • Are you looking to diversify your skills across different products?

We are recruiting for a number of System Safety Engineering roles, where you will work on real engineering problems, ensuring our products are safe and comply with regulatory standards, whilst championing a safety culture in our projects.
This role would suit a System Safety Engineer who:

  • Is comfortable working across the whole system and able to quickly develop an understanding of complex interactions and dependencies
  • Is eager to understand the impact of new technologies on safety design
  • Is motivated to work closely with multi-disciplined teams to get down into the detail
  • Has a high attention to detail and the confidence and drive to challenge others

Successful applicants will be able to:

  • Use safety analysis skills across the full system lifecycle: from requirements analysis (including bids and contracting); through design, development; to system integration, acceptance testing, delivery and in-service support
  • Identify hazards and investigate these using functional failure analyses and other techniques, identifying the necessary mitigations to reduce safety risks, and taking part in design trade-offs to implement them
  • Evidence your decisions using the data available to you, through fault tree analysis, scenario analysis, and various other techniques
  • Document and present the outcomes of safety analysis to stakeholders
  • Generate safety requirements to meet customer and/or regulatory safety target requirements
  • Work closely with many different engineering disciplines, customers, partners and suppliers to help solve complex problems
  • Support audits as required
  • Promote the specialism and Safety Culture within the project(s)
  • Contribute to continual improvement of the Company Product Safety and Environmental Impact Management System

What we need from you:
You really must have:

  • Experience of safety analysis of complex systems in a safety-critical industry
  • Experience across a number of engineering lifecycle phases
  • Experience with at least one of: ARP4754B, ARP4761A, RTCA DO-254, or DO-178C
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders of varying seniorities
  • A passion for promoting and improving safety culture
  • An interest in new and emerging technologies and safety analysis techniques

It would be nice, but not essential, if you had:

  • A relevant STEM degree
  • Experience across a number of sub-system teams to develop the system solution
  • Experience with a high degree of design complexity and significant levels of uncertainty
  • Knowledge of lasers, radar systems, and/or sensors and defensive aids systems
  • Awareness of Information Security
  • Involvement in cross-industry safety initiatives, such as via the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET) or Safety-Critical Systems Club (SCSC)

Experience with any of the following tools:

  • Cameo Systems Modeler
  • Microsoft Azure
  • IBM DOORS
  • Adelard ASCE
  • Isograph Reliability Work Bench
