The Opportunity

An innovative technology company is seeking a skilled and motivated Photonics Engineer, to Senior level, to join its growing team. Working at the forefront of optical sensing and laser-based systems, you will contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies for applications across defence, aerospace, and high-performance industrial sectors.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex optical challenges, working with multidisciplinary teams, and seeing their ideas come to life in the real world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and simulate optical systems using industry-standard tools (e.g. Zemax, COMSOL, LightTools).

  • Develop and integrate laser systems, fibre optics, and other photonic components into sensor platforms.

  • Conduct laboratory-based characterisation, testing, and validation of optical systems.

  • Collaborate with electronics, software, and mechanical teams to deliver robust, field-ready systems.

  • Support prototyping, calibration, and deployment in real-world environments.

  • Prepare clear technical documentation, test reports, and design reviews.

    Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Physics, Photonics, Optics, or a closely related field.

  • Experience in the design and testing of optical or laser systems.

  • Proficiency with optical simulation and analysis software.

  • Practical lab experience including alignment, fibre handling, and laser safety.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced R&D environment.

    Desirable Skills

  • Experience in defence, aerospace, or other regulated sectors.

  • Knowledge of optical signal processing or sensor fusion techniques.

  • Experience with miniaturised or ruggedised optical system design.

  • Familiarity with integration of photonic systems into electronics or embedded platforms.
