Job Introduction BBC Verify bringstogether open-source intelligence (OSINT) specialists,disinformation reporters, fact checkers and data journalists tofind impactful stories and to offer new lines and compellingcoverage of the biggest issues across BBC News's website, socialmedia, television and radio. The successful candidate will workalongside three other data scientists, using their computing skillsto multiply the story-finding and story-telling capacity of BBCVerify. Main Responsibilities This is a role for a data scientist,programmer, or a mix of both who specialises in ingesting,analysing and explaining satellite data and who can workeffectively in news as part of a multidisciplinary team. Theircomputing skills will enable the team to find new stories, to pickwhich story ideas to follow and to find stories faster fromsatellite imagery, APIs. Examples of recent projects include: ·Automating steps in the collection and presentation of satelliteimagery in order to speed the assessment of damage in militaryconflict (link) Are you the right candidate? The successfulcandidate must have: * Extensive experience finding newsworthyinsights in a broad range of satellite data sources * Extensiveexperience developing automated tools that have the potential tofind stories in satellite data * Experience of embedding the latestresearch practices/techniques relating to use of satellite data innon-expert groups * Extensive experience programming in R and/orPython to automate the extraction, cleaning, transformation andanalysis of satellite data * An understanding of delivering storiesor projects with editorial content to tight deadlines * Experienceidentifying, proposing and delivering new ideas for analysis ORimprovements to workflows based on technical skills andunderstanding of the organisation's needs. * The communicationskills to work with non-technical colleagues to identify thetechnical strengths and weaknesses of story ideas and to explainanalysis findings and caveats clearly and concisely About the BBCThe BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitablealternative employment within the BBC for different reasons andthey will be given priority consideration ahead of otherapplicants.
