Are you excited about contributing your technical expertise to the Business Development Unit (BDU) Hot Water & Solar Solutions? Theres a new opportunity within our satellite centre based in Preston, UK for an established Product Design Engineer to join our team. Youll play an integral part contributing to develop new products or to make improvement on existing products.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, project manager, appliance engineers, product managers, marketing, etc., to ensure user-focused product definition according to our group standards and core values.

This is what we see as your role

  • Based on the requirements of a test detail procedure, plan the test, understand the instruments to be used, the required data and resources.
  • Prepare test report and have it checked and validated
  • To promote a safe working culture and take responsibility in maintain zero LTIs (Lost Time Incidents) within the workshop and testing environment.
  • To assist in the generation and translation of product ECRs (Engineering Change Request) into Project Design Approval, which satisfies the product specification requirements, and meets the performance and reliability business requirements.
  • Research and develop new products/concepts, ensuring that the safety and performance characteristics conform to all national, European, international and internally agreed company and departmental standards and obtain formal legislative approval within agreed time/cost/specification criteria.
  • Assist in the preparation of research, test and development program(s), that meet agreed timescales and effectively validate the Product Design
  • To plan and prioritise own workload to achieve product support within agreed timescales, meeting all design requirements of the agreed departmental product plans.
  • Maintain accurate records on all research, product testing and development in accordance with departmental and ISO 9001 procedures, ensuring all data, information etc is correctly filed and is traceable.
  • Maintain high levels of communication at all times within the R&D Department, together with other departments such as Marketing, Manufacturing, Customer Services etc, providing technical information, guidance/assistance as appropriate.

Communication:

Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential as the role involves co-ordination with other departments. A high level of ability to achieve results within demanding timescales / costs / specification is essential.

You deal regularly with a wide range of personnel inside BDR Thermea Group

Youll have regular communications with all members of multi-functional core team and all areas of the business, including Marketing, Purchasing, Production, Design, Customer Services and Manufacturing Engineering, during which you will show strong influencing skills to progress actions and decisions.

You will be in contact with BDR Group colleagues, suppliers, approval bodies and occasionally consultants. You require a degree of influencing negotiations on technical issues.

Your knowledge, skills, experience and character include

  • The jobholder must possess an engineering qualification to degree/HND/HNC level or equivalent experience and have extensive Thermodynamics and testing of appliances experience. Must be fully conversant with product standards and regulations for hot water devices as well as having knowledge of the appropriate procedures for the testing, installation and safe use of domestic appliances. Experience in lab activities for a volume manufacturing process would be an advantage.
  • At least 5 years' experience at a senior level in an R&D Lab capacity with related products or in a similar industry
  • Strong Physical measuring skills (Flow, temperature, power, ), strong experience in electrical and mechanical activities (ideally be a DIYer) would be useful for test rig building and modifying.
  • Demonstrates commitment to CPD
