About the Role

Ourworld-leading Time & Frequency departmentare seeking an experienced and practicing Technical Architect.

You will be joining our team at an exciting time - we maintain the UKs National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are currently developing theNational Timing Centrethat will underpin our Critical National Infrastructure. This will address the risks associated with our dependency on global navigation satellite systems (such as GPS) that are vulnerable to both natural and intentional interference.

As the Principal Technical Architect, you will enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists, Engineers and specialists in Cyber Security, to design and implement an architect solutions to time, quality and cost.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the overall Technical Architecture for the solution, ensuring that it meets the requirements, is deliverable and is capable of underpinning delivery of a mission critical service
  • Ensure Technical Architecture is fully documented in accordance with the applicable standards and governance.
  • Through development of the Technical Architecture ensure that the optimal set of system components are adopted in terms of performance, risk, cost and long-term supportability/obsolescence.
  • Build and maintain a sound understanding of NPLs own capabilities and strategic intent, consequently inform its internal capability.
  • Support NPLs implementation of its own technical development and recruitment strategy.
  • Working with the Project Management Team, break down the solution into a set of components that can be delivered efficiently as part of a coherent and structured delivery plan.
  • Engage with the Design Team and Developers so that they understand the technical aspects of their delivery
  • Support progress reporting to NPL leadership, in relation to technical aspects of the delivery including risks, opportunities, progress against plan, resourcing requirements and external partnering needs.
  • Liaise with the end client to ensure that they are fully updated on the overall Technical Architecture, how it will meet their requirements, progress through delivery and any dependencies that there are upon them,
  • Engage with delivery partners to ensure that they are fully aware of their role in delivery of the solution architecture and the dependencies that rest with them

About You

  • Strong technical background. Experience in successful delivery of complex mission critical projects at scale.
  • Experience as a Technical Architect responsible for development and subsequent implementation of complex, mission critical network infrastructures through the project life cycle.
  • Strong technical interest, maintaining currency with exploitable emerging technologies and key players in the field.
  • Experienced working across the full project life cycle and within associated standards/governance regimes for delivery of scale mission critical projects into UK Government.
  • Proactive and forward thinking, capable of looking into the longer term to identify potential future challenges and determine solutions. For example through capability development/partnering strategy to ensure that the team is adequately resourced to meet the needs to the Architected Solution.
  • A strong communicator, capable of bridging between business need, solution requirements, system designers and technical delivery.
  • Ability to engage and command respect when engaging at senior levels within client and internal stakeholder communities.

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.

Neurodiversity in UK Space Careers: Turning Different Thinking into a Superpower

The UK space sector has quietly become one of the most exciting places to build a career. From small satellites & launch services to Earth observation, navigation, in-orbit servicing & space data startups, the industry needs people who can solve hard problems in smart ways. Those people are not all “typical” engineers or scientists – and that’s a strength, not a weakness. If you live with ADHD, autism or dyslexia, you may have been told your brain is “too distracted”, “too literal” or “too disorganised” for precision work in the space sector. In reality, many of the traits that made school or previous jobs difficult can be major assets in space engineering, mission operations & space data roles. This guide is written for neurodivergent job seekers exploring UK space careers. We’ll look at: What neurodiversity means in a space industry context How ADHD, autism & dyslexia strengths map to common space roles Practical workplace adjustments you can request under UK law How to talk about neurodivergence in applications & interviews By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of where you might thrive in the UK space sector – & how to turn “different thinking” into a genuine superpower.

Space Sector Hiring Trends 2026: What to Watch Out For (For Job Seekers & Recruiters)

The UK space sector is no longer a niche curiosity. It is now a strategic industry worth billions, employing tens of thousands of people across nearly 2,000 organisations – and it has been growing faster than the wider UK economy for years. At the same time, employers report serious skills shortages, especially in software, data and systems engineering, with recruitment and retention now cited as key barriers to growth. For job seekers, this is encouraging – but it does not mean every space application is an easy win. For recruiters, competing for talent with tech, defence, energy and finance is only getting harder. This article, written for www.ukspacejobs.co.uk , explores the space sector hiring trends to watch in 2026, aimed at both: Job seekers searching for terms like “space jobs in the UK”, “satellite jobs UK”, or “space engineer roles”; and Recruiters and hiring managers interested in “space sector hiring trends” and “space recruitment UK”.

Space Industry Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK space‑sector hiring has shifted from pedigree‑first screening to capability‑driven evaluation across the full stack—spacecraft systems, payload/RF, flight software, GNC/ADCS, propulsion, structures/thermal, AIT (assembly–integration–test), mission/ground operations, reliability/radiation, and compliance (ECSS, export control). Employers want proof you can build, test, operate and scale space systems safely and economically. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for satellite/spacecraft engineers, payload & RF/MM‑wave, flight & ground software, GNC/ADCS, power/thermal, AIT/test, mission ops, data/EO, and space product/TPM roles. Who this is for: Systems engineers, payload/RF engineers, flight software & FDIR, GNC/ADCS, power/thermal/structures, propulsion, AIT/test, reliability/radiation, QA/compliance, ground segment/cloud, mission operations, EO/data processing, and product/programme managers targeting roles in the UK space ecosystem.
