Mechanical Engineer – Structural Design & Analysis

Location: Stockport, Greater Manchester

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £50 - £57k DOE

A leading defence engineering company is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join its high-performing engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to take technical ownership of structural integrity, stress analysis, and fatigue evaluation for critical bridging systems used in demanding environments.

Key Responsibilities

Lead mechanical engineering activities for structural projects, ensuring compliance with specifications, safety, and legislative standards

Conduct stress analysis, fatigue assessments, and non-linear FEA simulations

Create and review technical documentation, test specifications, and reports

Supervise both in-house and outsourced engineering projects, including design reviews for fabricated components

Support the development and mentoring of engineering staff

Liaise with customers to verify project scopes and align deliverables

Drive continuous improvement through structured problem-solving

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

Chartered Engineer status (e.g. IMechE, IStructE)

Strong understanding of structural behaviour, material properties, and fabrication processes (aluminium and steel)

Expertise in Eurocodes, design standards, and non-linear FEA (e.g. ANSYS)

Competence in 3D CAD software (e.g. Solid Edge or SpaceClaim)

Experience with design validation through simulation and testing

Excellent IT and communication skills, including report writing and time management

Desirable

Proficiency in German

Experience with strain gauging and structural health monitoring
