Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Our client is at the forefront of innovative Marine engineering, specialising in the design, optimisation, and supply of decarbonisation solutions for the maritime industry.
With their expertise in wing propulsion, foiling and flight control systems, they are leading the sustainability revolution within the maritime and shipping industry. From reducing fuel consumption – measured in tonnes per day – on ocean going ships through their sail technology and advanced efficiency optimisation methods, to enabling the growth of marine electrification with the implementation of their foiling and FOSS solutions.
They are looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team and be at the forefront of this industry leading technology. You will be leading major design and development projects and be instrumental to the design of current and exciting future projects, working alongside industry leading experts to take ownership of mechanical systems, from concept through to production. In addition, you will support the Head of Engineering in overseeing the development of the Design team, to drive the development of innovative processes and tools, and ensure the successful execution of projects.
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer Role:

  • Leading an integrated, multi-disciplinary design and development team to generate design concepts through to production, ensuring that proposed design solutions meet all project requirements for function, quality, timing and cost.
  • Leading on a variety of projects, anything from 40m fabricated sail technology structures for series production, to a one-off prototype for a small foiling vessel.
  • Responsible for the delivery of the design of components and systems meeting the company processes and standards.
  • Contribute to the continual improvement and development of methodologies and toolsets to enhance our processes and techniques to stay at the forefront of innovation.
  • Support pre-contract and concept generation, through feasibility, to support early-stage planning and requirements generation.
  • Support the Head of Engineering in leading and developing design team members, planning resource in conjunction with Head of Engineering and Programme Managers.
  • Completing hand calculations for mechanical fixings, inserts and bonded joints.
  • Technical liaison with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support business development activities and creation of customer proposals.
  • Support project management activities and monitor project plans and progress.
  • Balancing multiple concurrent projects, understand your working priorities and clearly show progress, delivery status, and key risks and issues.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the engineering domain, contributing to high-level problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Lead or participate in technical reviews, ensuring the quality and reliability of engineering outputs.
  • Supporting with physical build, evaluation, and validation.
  • Lead the compilation of DFMEA’s and DVP’s.
  • Management of external resource in conjunction with Head of Engineering.
    Lead Mechanical Design Engineer Requirements:
    A degree in mechanical, automotive, marine or aerospace engineering.
    Extensive experience in the use of a major CAD system (NX ideally) to produce detailed drawings to a high standard with the correct application of GD&T and DFM as necessary.
    Excellent understanding of mechanical engineering principles, and application through use of design calculations.
    Experience in designing both metallic and composite components would be ideal.
    Excellent understanding of materials, welding, bonding, and fastening techniques.
    Some familiarity of hands-on workshop activities like fabrication, CNC machining would be desirable.
    Extensive experience with classical hand calculations and creating own calculation sheets.
    Experience in the use of FEA tools to accelerate development and support with validation of the design would be preferable.
    A working Knowledge of TeamCenter and Siemens SimCenter would be advantageous.
    Understanding of production manufacturing techniques would be desirable.
    Ability to coach and supervise an engineering team or project team, and to delegate as appropriate.
    Must be able to work within a close-knit team taking and giving instruction as appropriate.
    Project management experience would be an advantage.
    Committed to taking ownership of allocated tasks and determined to achieve challenging tasks and be self-motivated.
    Attention to detail, be accurate at all times, and apply appropriate validation techniques.
