The RTI function is at the centre of Thales UKsupporting growth in all of the key market areas, and spearheadingactivity into future markets identified as growth opportunities.Due to a rapid period of growth we are looking to add an EmbeddedSystems Research Engineer to the team.The successful candidate willcarry out low to mid Technology readiness level (TRL) research anddevelopment activities for potential future products, in embeddedsoftware, for both civil and military communicationsapplications.As an Embedded Systems Research Engineer you will:Beexpected to work within a group of other research staff, as well asbeing self-motivated to work individually, and be flexible to adaptinto new research areas and ways of working. Tasks are expected toinclude:Development of embedded C / C++Development of testscriptsBuilding and evaluating proof-of-concept demonstrators andprototypesIntegration with hardwareIntegration withnetworksSoftware and system testingSoftware deployment in cloudinfrastructure About You The ability to listen to customers,interpret their needs, seek clarification and reach agreement, witha view to developing long lasting relationships.The ability topresent and explain complex technical issues to management,colleagues and customers.The willingness and ability to workcollaboratively as part of a team, whilst taking responsibility forindividual tasks.The ability to analyse complex technical problems,exercise judgement and offer innovative, practical and compliantsolutions in a timely manner.The ability to prioritise, manage theworkload, be flexible, and work under pressure to demandingtimescalesThe ability and willingness to continue to learn anddevelop technical skills, assisting others to do likewise whereappropriateA balance of creative thinking/problem-solving with goodengineering practiceSkills:The successful candidate will have agood level of understanding of embedded C and/or C++, as well assome of the following skills:Python or similar scriptinglanguageReal-Time embedded applicationsExperience with real-time OS(e.g. FreeRTOS etc.)Embedded Linux OS Development (e.g. Buildroot,Yocto, Driver Development etc.)Linux application developmentLinuxnetworkingArm processorsHypervisors / Containers /KubernetesAndroid application developmentMISRA / CERT C developmentpracticesWhilst we have listed these skills, the successfulcandidate must be flexible to move to new opportunities as businessobjectives and workload dictate. Qualifications/Experience: Theideal applicant would have several years of experience working withembedded software. However, the roles and responsibilities can beadjusted to fit, and a successful candidate will be supported todevelop further.The successful candidate will typically have afundamental technical understanding built on an Honours degree(minimum 2.1), a Masters degree, or a PhD in a relevantdiscipline.We also expect candidates to be proficient in the use ofstandard PC-based office tools. We currently use Microsoft tools:Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project &Visio.Desirable:Experience in one or more of the followingareas:Software Defined RadioMobile application developmentSafetycertification (e.g. Avionic or Automotive)Security certification(e.g. Common Criteria)Cloud development and deploymentHardwaredebug and testKnowledge and experience in related areas, such asVHDL, firmware or electronic hardware, would be anadvantage.Membership of a professional institution and professionalengineering registrationSecurity Clearance statement Due to thenature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles aresubject to security restrictions. This role requires you to be asole British National from birth and achieve Security Clearance(SC) without any caveats .
