AtkinsRéalis, Balfour Beatty and Egis Road Operations UK are part of a consortium, creating Connect Plus Services, a unique partnership with a collective strength in highways asset care from finance, through to design, build, maintenance as well as day to day operation.

As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major improvement projects, such as widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing hundreds of variable messaging signs and gantries, helping to maximise the use of the network and deliver more reliable journeys. We also manage the Dartford River crossing and operate and maintain 440 kilometres of motorway providing our customer and road user with a world-class highway service.

Role Purpose:

The Structures Asset comprises over 2500 individual structures ranging from small span structures to the QEII Bridge at the Dartford River Crossing, and also includes vehicle restraint systems incorporating 440km of road network. The role of Structures Asset Engineer will include the development of whole lifecycle plans to satisfy the long-term hand back requirements of the M25 DBFO contract. It will encompass use and update of the asset management system, bridge inspections, condition data review, developing long term strategy, identification of renewal works, whole life costing and development of prioritised annual, 5-year and 30-year asset management plans.

Working closely with Structures Manager and Senior Structures Asset Engineers in managing the Structures Asset. Interface with Asset Investment, Technical, Design, Delivery and Maintenance teams across the Connect Plus/Connect Plus Services Team.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Developing and implementing asset management maintenance and renewal strategies for all structure categories i.e. bridges and large culverts, small span structures, retaining walls, sign/signal gantries and masts.
  2. Development of value led, technical decision-making processes and procedures to support long-term asset management.
  3. Utilising the Asset Management System including RMMS and Decision Support Tools in identifying structural renewal and maintenance interventions.
  4. Support the delivery and undertake as required bridge inspections.
  5. Assist with structures condition reporting.
  6. Scheme Identification/Option Studies and other lifecycle advisory activities in relation to structures renewals.
  7. Assist with the identification of efficient renewal scheme interventions.
  8. Whole life cost analysis including lifecycle planning, optimisation and prioritisation of renewal schemes in the support of the development of the Annual Asset Management Plan, 5 year Rolling Asset Management Plan and 30 year Rolling Asset Management Plan.
  9. Compliance with legislation and contract service schedules in relation to bridge structures.
  10. Support programme of work on Substandard Structures including piers and parapets.
  11. Liaison with the CPS on-roads team to ensure consistency in maintenance regimes.
  12. Attendance at callouts for the management of emergency incidents involving specified assets.
  13. Assist in collating information for effective performance measurement and controls.
  14. Carry out other duties required by the Structures Manager and Senior Structures Asset Engineers commensurate with the role.

Qualifications/ skills/ experience:

  1. Qualified to degree level or equivalent.
  2. Working towards Professional Qualification, MICE, MIAM, MIStructE, or similar.
  3. Knowledge and experience of highway bridge asset management and an understanding of bridge inspection and maintenance activities.
  4. Awareness of RWSC, DMRB and SHW.
  5. Understanding of Asset Management Systems.
  6. Understanding of working within the Strategic Road Network, with National Highways.
  7. Experience in Windows server operating systems.
  8. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel.
  9. Current UK driving license.
