What you'll do

Viasat’s International Government business unit delivers against the requirements for voice, data and video services with demand for global availability and utmost reliability. Whether a military commander on operations, a government official responding to a local emergency or a head of state conducting international affairs, Viasat provides them with essential access to voice and broadband data, where and when they need it.

Primary role purpose:

The Senior PNT System Engineer to be a self-motivated individual to lead systems design, modelling and analysis projects for all aspects of advanced satellite navigation systems, identifying key concepts and capabilities for further investigation and engineering development.

Working as part of the Strategic Engineering team within the International Government, this role is a key part of growing and improving Viasat’s navigation systems capabilities. The role is based in Finsbury Square, London and will support the technical development of navigation and timing systems capabilities and services. The Senior PNT System Engineer will also contribute to the development of specifications for new navigation systems concepts including space and ground segments.

The Senior GNSS System Engineer is a Senior Level Professional who will have shown wide-ranging engineering skills and will take on the responsibility of delivering key engineering projects in both pre-contract and post-contract stages.


The day-to-day

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the delivery of all engineering aspects of significant high value projects including managing the contribution of other specialists and sub-contractors, and capable of demonstrating traceability of work to project objectives.
  • Be the technical authority for all aspects of space-based navigation mission analysis within a cross-industrial team and assist in the development of a company-wide strategy on PNT related activities.
  • Develop tools to be used for modelling the performance of a variety of space-based positioning, navigation and timing concepts, using MATLAB or similar applications.
  • Provide expert support on space-based navigation mission analysis to institutional bodies, for example the UK Space Agency, ESA and similar government and intergovernmental bodies.
  • Prepare technical reports, bid documents and recommendations for upper management including providing business/cost evaluations.
  • Identify programmatic risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies to enable project and business management functions to assess and define long-term programme developments.
  • Carry out requirement capture, develop and validate key specifications and architectures for navigation systems via functional block diagrams, interface definitions, system process flows and definitions.
  • Perform trade-off studies to evaluate architecture implementation options.
  • Contribute analysis and modelling of reliability, availability, maintainability aspects (RAMS) for the selected architecture options.
  • Validate proposed architecture designs approaches using a Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) approach implemented via standard systems engineering tools.
  • Validate key aspects of the selected architectures via engineering test bed emulation and simulations.


What you'll need

  • Essential Knowledge, Qualifications & Skills:
    • Qualified in a numerate subject, Physics or Engineering or Maths in addition to several years industrial experience, or comparable expertise.
    • Strong experience with projects or large systems engineering programmes within industry in roles equivalent to Systems Engineer/Systems Architect.
    • Knowledge of standards applicable to GNSS and associated technical areas.
    • Good knowledge and understanding of Satellite Navigation Systems.
    • Knowledge and understanding of space system operations, spacecraft design and spacecraft development (AIT) methodologies.

    • Highly-competent and able to deliver a clear, well set out vision/definition.
    • Holding a higher degree in a related engineering subject.
    • Holding System Engineering Qualifications, such as INCOSE, or a member of an appropriate Institutional Body.
    • Demonstrating objective, rational and multidisciplinary thinking.
    • An understanding of project management principles.
    • A good understanding of financial modelling principles.
    • Excellent communications skills including presentations, writing and reporting skills and with people at all levels of the organization.
    • A passionate desire to take on ambitious systems analysis and modelling tasks and deliver innovative solutions in a timely manner.
