Job Overview

Working as a Control Systems Engineer (internally knows as an RTS Commissioning Engineer), day to day, you will be responsible for supporting work on site which is currently delivered by a third party, you will be facilitating this work as well as offering support with technical issues, including ‘hands on’ work such as implementing changes and fixes on control systems.

This role will predominately be covering sites in the Hampshire and Sussex directorate; so regular travel will be involved.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing commissioning support for multiple CAPEX funded projects and the Obsolescence & Standardisation strategy

  • Assisting with the delivery of the RTS schemes PLC / SCADA / Telemetry replacement projects.

  • Completing small upgrade/ migration projects for PLC’s & HMI’s.

  • Supporting third parties and our supply chain in delivery of larger upgrade works.

  • Supporting the ICA function at complex, long duration control system failures on Water and Wastewater sites.

  • Supporting the RTS team regarding technical solution appraisals to achieve overall strategy goals and ambitions.

  • Building effective working relationships with contractors, team members and other key stakeholders.

  • Managing technical specifications and options to create innovative solutions which create financial efficiencies to beat the project’s budget.

  • Monitoring and reporting the ongoing delivery of projects to key stakeholders, including variations to proposed plan.

  • Ensuring all internal systems, standards and requirements are met in project delivery to SWS.

  • Acting as a key member of the RTS Team representing your regional area to support strategy delivery across the estate

    About You

    Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyse and understand complex and inter-dependant project plans and assure such in a thorough, logical way

  • Significant depth of knowledge of fault finding, calibration, testing, investigating and programming in technical aspects such as telemetry, flow metering, control systems and other measurement meters.

  • Experience in implementing process improvements via control system modifications and experience in diagnosing and fixing complex process and control system faults.

  • Highly flexible approach and engaging personal style

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills

  • Highly logical and analytical approach with excellent planning skills and the ability to work to deadlines and under pressure

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • A credible individual, capable of relating to programme and project managers across differing business functions at a senior level, challenging them, and exerting significant influence at a programme and individual project level.

    Knowledge

  • Extensive PLC and SCADA systems knowledge and experience.

  • Strong transmission media and telemetry knowledge and experience.

  • Sound IT skills particularly in MS office applications including Excel and Microsoft Project

  • Good understanding of the principles of wastewater, clean water and sludge treatment processes

  • Must understand the legislative / regulatory requirements associated with H&S, regulatory compliance and waste management.

  • Must be aware of SW’s statutory obligations, levels of service to customers and how new initiatives will impact on WTW compliance and stable operation of STCs

    Experience

  • Several years relevant experience in a process or industrial environment.

  • Instrumentation apprenticeship within water utility or similar industry.

  • Experience of operating in a flexible and highly dynamic programme environment.

  • Proven technical, commercial, and contractual awareness.

    Qualifications

    Mandatory: At least HNC in electronic / electrical engineering or equivalent with experience.

    Current Electrical Installation Regulations qualification
