About the Opportunity

AXIOM is one of the DSA alliance partners and is an unincorporated Joint Venture (JV) made up of three major engineering contracting companies each with complementary capabilities and skills. The members have excellent nuclear pedigrees, demonstrated expertise and effective track records across the UK nuclear fleet and related nuclear industries.

AXIOM provides process, mechanical, civil structural and architectural, electrical, instrumentation, control and safety capabilities to support Sellafield Ltd.

As well as having a large, dedicated team working for Sellafield Ltd, each has immense reach-back capability into parent organisations for knowledge, expertise and innovations gained from within, and external to, the nuclear industry. Examples of other markets include Oil and Gas, Environment, Mining and Aerospace.

The extensive capacity and capabilities of the AXIOM alliance provide the essential expertise that is crucial to achieving both the designs of the alliance and the wider goals of Sellafield Ltd and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

We are seeking a Principal HVAC Engineer to join our team in Stockton.

The role will support the HVAC Capability team in all aspects of HVAC and Building Services, preferably with knowledge and experience in nuclear standards and processes, specifically the delivery of the design of HVAC Systems or modification to existing HVAC Systems. Able to be client facing and demonstrate confidence as a subject matter expert hence able to support all stakeholders.

Role expectations are;

  • Design of Ventilation systems from basic principles and an understanding of containment philosophy
  • Production of HVAC system design deliverables, specifying heat rejection plant (eg. air / water cooled condensers, heat pumps and heat recovery systems of varying types. The design of HVAC systems for cooling industrial process environments.
  • Steam system design
  • Production of system schematics / Engineering Flow Diagrams (EFDs).
  • Preparation of psychrometric calculations


  • Degree in Building Services Engineering or minimum HND plus extensive experience in the industry
  • Experience in the Use of industry standard software such as Hevacomp, Revit and Pipenet
  • Thermal modelling experience would be an advantage.
  • Awareness of EG_0_1738_1 - Ventilation of Radioactive Areas.
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role/environment, with recent relevant exposure of work in a regulated industry
  • An understanding of AutoCAD packages and its capabilities
