There are two main aspects to the OT Technical Engineer's job:
· Support engineering for the Primary and Secondary Operational Applications
· Project engineering for OT Projects
There is a pool of OT Technical Engineers whose work is allocated by the OT Operations Management team. The work that is allocated to each Technical Engineer includes engineering support work from an ongoing list of day to day support tasks and technical engineering work that is associated with OT Projects.
Support Work
To provide a hardware and software support management service for the Primary and Secondary Operational Technology Applications such as PowerOn, PI Data Historian and ODMS.
The role covers all aspects of support from providing direct "hands on” hardware and software technical support for Control Centre operatives, to managing internal and external third parties who provide second or third level support services to OT.
The role requires a high level of technical and operational understanding of the Operational Applications (software and hardware) and also requires a high level of communications skills to understand the customer's and supplier's issues and then provide a service that meets and exceeds their expectations.
Project Work
To design, configure, test and deliver bespoke and standardised real time Primary and Secondary Operational Applications for use by others to monitor and manage the Transmission and Distribution power networks and maintain their performance in accordance with industry regulations and safety standards.
The role covers all aspects of procurement, technical evaluation, configuration, development, testing and commissioning of Operational Application technology (software, hardware and security).
The role also requires an appreciation of project management skills in order to work within the OT, IT and SSE ET Project Management environments.
Key Accountabilities
Analysing Business Requirements
As part of the Project role the post holder will work with the OT Project Managers to help review customer requests for large and small OT projects and then liaise with the customers to obtain a thorough understanding of their requirements in order to determine their full requirements.
The post holder will then work with the OT Project Manager to help turn that request into a proposal that provides the best solution for the customer.
Solution Development
As part of the Project role the post holder will work with OT Project Managers, colleagues and suppliers to develop and configure new facilities in existing Operational Applications and to help develop new solutions using either new applications or new software modules for existing applications that meet the customer requirements in a safe and secure manner and that also fit into the overall OT strategy.
This role will include Factory and Site Acceptance testing of new applications and new functionality within existing applications.
Fault Investigation
As part of the Support role, the post holder will work across the OT Operations team and the Operational Application third-party suppliers to investigate and resolve Operational Application support issues in line with the Service Level Agreements that are in place with each customer.
Ongoing Operational Application Support Tasks
As part of the Support role the post holder will work across the OT Operations team to ensure completion of the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly ongoing support tasks. These tasks include monitoring and management of Database tables, disk space, logs and other technical services to ensure that all Operational Applications are working well within their operational limits.
Security
As part of the Support and Project role, the post holder will help ensure that all solutions delivered and supported by OT are designed, developed, configured, delivered and supported in accordance with appropriate company, industry and CPNI IT Security practices and procedures.
Safety
As part of the Support and Project roles the post holder will challenge any unsafe act, and ensure that solutions are designed and delivered in accordance with appropriate company practices and procedures, and that they comply with all statutory and regulatory requirements, in order to minimise the risk of accidents and to drive safe working standards.
Ensure contractor teams who are put to work follow the client's Operational Rules, CDM requirements and safe ways of working including Method Statements and Risk assessments.
Expertise and Team Development
As part of the Support and Project roles, the post holder will maintain and continuously develop their technical and procedural expertise in order to set the standards for others to follow.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Business Knowledge
· An understanding of the Business, Regulatory and OFGEM customer drivers.

Essential Functional / Technical Skills
· A qualification in an Engineering, Computing or Science based subject – Degree level (preferred), HND Level (Minimum)
· A strong understanding and experience of the design, configuration, installation and commissioning of Operational Applications such as DMS, Data Historians, general SCADA, Telemetry and communications systems.
· An understanding of the safety requirements of the client's Operational Applications in terms of the safety of people and plant in line with the client policies.
· A understanding and experience of working with various Operating Systems – including Windows Desktop, Windows Server, Linux
· An understanding and experience of working with various Database Applications – including Oracle and Microsoft SQL
· Working understanding and experience of Project Management methodology and how to apply it appropriately for large and small projects.
· An understanding and awareness of OT cyber-security requirements in order to ensure delivery of safe and secure project solutions
· A good understanding and experience of working with Communications Technologies
· A good understanding and experience of FAT and SAT techniques and documentation
· Working understanding of risk assessment and risk management processes
