We have an opportunity for experienced Nurses to join oursmall, supportive team. Our team is led and managed by an Epilepsy Nurse Consultant, 6 Nurses, 3 Healthcare Assistants, a Pharmacy Advisor and Assistantand our Administrator. The students we support have a variety of complex healthcare needs, so our Teaching and Residential teams need the backup and supportof an experienced and varied Nursing Team.

Main duties of the job

You will have responsibility for the planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised nursing care. You will also work autonomously within the team as a key Nurse, ensuring that a holistic approach to the health care needs of the students is maintained.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

Provide specialist epilepsy support including emergency treatment and the management of status epilepticus. To work autonomously using clinical expertise to assess, treat or refer appropriately. Respond and attend any emergency situation across site, deliver the necessary emergency treatment or first aid.

Where necessary liaise with registrar/consultant/external healthcare professional if the young person requires transfer to external service.

To provide assessment, advice and treatment in the management of minor injuries and illnesses and refer to external agencies as required. To administer vaccination programmes for all residential students on successful completion of necessary training. Advise and support staff across campus in the management of a variety of healthcare needs epilepsy, gastrostomy, diabetes providing in-depth specialist training. Undertake the role of key nurse, being the first point of contact for parents, house and education staff and external agencies of key students. Empower children and young people with epilepsy and other associated disabilities to be aware of their rights and take control of their lives. Identify, plan and deliver individualised nursing care plans. To maintain accurate, timely and detailed records. To collect venepuncture sample as requested by consultant and registrars. Assess and treat student in the absence of a doctor, solely responsible for all clinical decisions and at times in charge of the whole site.

Non Clinical

To be responsible for the checking and safe use of all emergency equipment and other equipment. To be responsible to checking stock including checking expiry dates of medication in emergency room and emergency bags. To fully engage in clinical supervision and performance appraisal and undertake professional development as identified through performance appraisal. Provide appropriate training and teaching across all disciplines at Young Epilepsy as required. To promote effective communication between the nursing team and members of the multidisciplinary team, all Young Epilepsy staff and where appropriate external agencies. To complete all necessary health reports for individual key students and attend meetings as required. Attend professional and in-service training days to ensure knowledge and skills are kept up to date. To work within and contribute to the development of Young Epilepsy policies and procedures and adhere to statutory policies. Show evidence of continued professional development and access the nurse learning and development programme. Provide activity data from which information can be used to further develop the nursing role and comply with CQC requirements.

Managerial / Leadership

To manage the health needs of the students on site. To provide support to the Nurse Consultant and other more senior nurses in the management of the nursing team. To take shift leader responsibilities in the absence of a more senior member of staff. Act as a mentor to student nurses and newly appointed staff. To participate in the recruitment process for nursing service posts. To notify the Nurse Consultant of any concerns about staffing capacity or performance. To provide supervision to part of the nursing team ensuring that professional development and standards of care are maintained. To undertake annual performance review for some staff.

Speciality Tasks

Participate in audit/research carried out to enhance the standard of care and the development of the nursing role. Ensure nursing practice is sound and in line with current evidence base research, and fulfils the requirements of the NMC. To be the designated nurse on shift to support young people and their families during their telemetry stay, completing the necessary paperwork, liaising with consultants, registrars and families. Promote Clinical Governance and contribute to the Clinical Governance process.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Valid UK Driving Licence. Up to date Revalidation Good organisational skills. Excellent communication skills both verbally and written. Ability to prioritise conflicting demands. Good computer skills

Desirable

Experience of communicating complex information to parents/carers. Ability to learn and be proficient in use of IT programmes
