Overview

Stirling Dynamics is recruiting for Senior/Principal Modelling and Simulation Contractors.

Due to upcoming projects and continued growth, Stirling Dynamics are looking for multiple experienced Modelling and Simulation Contractors to support with a current project within the Marine Business Unit delivering into both commercial and defence environments.

The Simulation, Dynamics and Control capability provides expertise to both internal and external customers in all areas of analysis but the below are particularly relevant for the role we are looking to recruit:

Control
System performance
Equipment modelling
Vehicle dynamicsModelling, simulation, dynamics, and control has always been at the core of Stirling Dynamics' capabilities, and we have been at the forefront of developing modelling techniques and model-based design activities for over 30 years. Modelling has never been more important for engineering design, with requirements for reverse engineering, root cause analysis and real time models.

As a business, Stirling Dynamics work across a wide variety of projects from significant modifications on civil and military aircraft; development projects for large aerospace OEMs; concepts and feasibility studies for the emerging eVTOL industry; controller actuation development for simulator and flight worthy products and control and automation covering submarine autopilots and flight control laws.

The successful contractor will be predominantly based in our Bristol office, although they can work remotely part of the time. The contract will initially be for 6 months with options for further work beyond this.

Responsibilities

The contractor would work on producing models at vehicle and system level representing plant and control algorithms. The Mathworks toolset is used heavily including Simulink and associated toolboxes, and so a good understanding of the use of version control software (e.g. GIT) and task management toolsets is required.
Candidates will have the following responsibilities (depending on experience):
Developing task definition (together with the technical lead)
Defining model and control algorithm requirements
Build and test of models
Peer review of models
Preparation and presentation of results, models etc to customers
Formal verification procedures
Authoring model documentation

Qualifications

Candidates will ideally be degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related discipline (preferably Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering Mathematics, Physics, or similar)

Essential skills

Matlab/Simulink
Hydro-actuated systems
Electro-mechanical actuated systems
Multi-body simulation
Vehicle dynamics
Systems engineering

Desired skills

Application within the Marine sector
Advanced control theory, such as Kalman filters, and state estimation
Real time models
Code generation
C/C++
Flexible, can-do approach
Ability to deal with multiple conflicting requests
Professional attitude
Self-motivated to see tasks through to successful completion
Strong time management and organisational skills

Experience

The candidate is expected to have industrial engineering experience, using modelling for the development and analysis of complex systems.
We are particularly interested in individuals with a background in ANY of the following disciplines:
Hydro-actuated systems
Electro-mechanical actuated systems
Multi-body simulation
Vehicle dynamics
Systems engineering
Flight controls
Dynamic loads
Real time models
Motor control
Vehicle control
Actuation systems
ARP4754
DO178
DO331

What do I need before I apply

Due to security restrictions on the projects, we can only consider UK nationals for this role.

Benefits

A competitive rate will be agreed based on the contractor's experience

Top 10 Skills in UK Space Careers According to LinkedIn & Indeed Job Postings

The UK space sector is accelerating fast—expanding through satellite communications, Earth observation, launch services, and new technologies like small satellites and space robotics. As this dynamic industry grows, employers are seeking professionals who can blend engineering, data, software, and operations with strategic insight. But what skills actually get you noticed in UK space sector job ads? Drawing from LinkedIn and Indeed, this article lays out the Top 10 space industry skills in demand for 2025. You’ll also get practical guidance on showcasing these skills in your CV, interviews, and portfolio, plus a 12-week learning roadmap to build them.

The Future of Space Sector Jobs: Careers That Don’t Exist Yet

The space sector is experiencing a dramatic transformation. Once dominated by government agencies such as NASA, ESA, and the Russian Space Agency, space has become a global commercial marketplace. Start-ups, private investors, and international partnerships are fuelling a new “space race” that is not only about exploration but also about economic growth, defence, climate science, and connectivity. The global space economy was valued at over $500 billion in 2023, with forecasts predicting it could surpass $1 trillion by 2040. The UK has its own ambitious target: capturing 10% of the global market by 2030, representing an industry worth £40 billion annually and supporting more than 100,000 jobs. UK contributions to the sector already include: Satellite leadership: Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) pioneered small satellites. Telecommunications: Inmarsat and OneWeb are global leaders in satellite connectivity. Launch capacity: Spaceport Cornwall and proposed Scottish spaceports place the UK on the map for satellite launches. Science & exploration: British scientists have contributed to missions like Mars Rovers and the James Webb Space Telescope. But the future of space goes far beyond satellites and rockets. As space technology converges with AI, robotics, quantum computing, materials science, and biotechnology, entirely new careers are emerging. Many of the most impactful space jobs of the next 20 years don’t exist yet. This article explores: Why new space jobs are inevitable The future careers most likely to appear How today’s roles will evolve Why the UK is uniquely positioned to lead How professionals can prepare now
