Reports to

Mechanical Design & Analysis Functional Manager

Responsible For

SSTL are looking for motivated and dynamic Mechanical Analyst to support current and future flight spacecraft projects. You will support the analysis and testing of new structural developments for both qualification and flight hardware. The role will involve structural analysis and test activities.

You will report to the Mechanical Design & Analysis Functional Manager within the Structure and Propulsion department, and work closely within a team of project managers, design engineers, system engineers and principal engineers.

Key Tasks

  • Carrying out quasi-static and dynamic analysis and generating structural margins of safety using finite element methods and hand calculations
  • Finite element modelling of mechanical components and structures
  • Specifying/identifying appropriate materials and surface treatments for mechanical component design
  • Support off-site, normally national, but sometimes international environmental test campaigns
  • Correlating and validating analytical models to obtain agreement with experimental data
  • Developing environmental envelope specifications from launch documentation, analysis and test data
  • Maintaining mass budgets, estimating Centre of Gravity positions and moments of inertia
  • Creating analysis and test reports

PERSON SPECIFICATION (essential requirements)

Nationality

  • Eligible to live and work in the UK and gain SC level security clearance

Qualifications

  • A good 1st Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Experience

  • Use of software packages including Nastran, HyperMesh, SmartOffice, MATLAB, Ansys Workbench
  • Proven analytical and design experience
  • Background in Spacecraft, Aircraft or Formula 1 structures and sub-systems
  • Experience in a high precision, high value and low volume environment
  • Experience in analysis of both metallic and composite materials
  • Experience of Static, Dynamic, stability and thermo-elastic analysis
  • Experience of vibration or static testing
  • Detailed hand stressing

Knowledge & Skills

  • Good management and organisational skills
  • A good understanding of the principles of FEA
  • Experience in the use of a 3D CAD system (SolidWorks or similar)
  • High attention to detail
  • Understanding of Spacecraft Systems an advantage
  • Good communication skills and the ability to generate technical documentation
  • Competent use of Microsoft Office suite including Outlook
  • Proven effective communication with project managers and customers
  • Proven ability to deliver solutions under pressure and to tight timescales
  • Flexible; able to work on a variety of projects
  • Good team working skills
