Department: Acute Cardiac Care Ward

Band 6 £35, – £42, per annum, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

Hours: Full-Time 37.5 hours/week 

The Acute Cardiac Care Unit at Milton Keynes University Hospital is looking for a highly motivated experienced nurse to join the senior team on this fast paced and exciting area. 

The Acute Cardiac Care Unit has 8 Coronary Care Beds, 4 side rooms and 14 “stepdown” beds, and has the ability to monitor all of those patients via fixed monitors or via telemetry. We care for patients with a wide range of conditions including, NSTEMI, post Angiography patients, Heart Failure, Arrhythmias and Electrolyte Imbalance.

We work closely with the cardiac rehabilitation and heart failure teams and our dedicated discharge officer to ensure that our patients leave the ward with all the information and support that they need. The ward staffing ratios have been established to reflect the fact that we regularly take level 2 patients (Safer Nursing Care Tool)

Milton Keynes University Hospital is proud to be able to offer elective angioplasty to both in and out-patients which means that the successful candidate will need to be proficient in the vascular management of these patients. The Trust is also increasing the complexity of the cardiac implants that we can offer to our patients.

Main duties of the job

On joining the team, you will attend a week-long Trust Induction program followed by 2 weeks working alongside an existing band 6, in a supernumerary capacity. During this period, you will follow a tailor-made induction program, based on your previous experience.

Once established on the unit, you will gain your own team of junior staff and be responsible for their appraisals and ensuring they are up to date for their mandatory training. You will take part in audits and be expected to take the divisional bleep for medicine.

·To initiate/ facilitate developments in nursing in partnership with the ward manager

·To be the ward representative in the absence of the ward manager

·To assist the ward sister in the reviewof nursing practice and service delivery so that it is reflective of the National Service Framework and the British Cardiovascular Society/European Society of Cardiology Guidelines

·Provide clinical expertise

·To role model high standards of nursing care and professionalism

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care, incorporating the standards and philosophy of the ward. Organise method of care delivery within the ward/department, allocating, prioritising and delegating effectively. This includes responding to capacity and patient dependency requirements.

Professional

To demonstrate a professional approach to leadership and management of staff. To provide clinical support and advice to junior members of staff.

Management

To be responsible for the day to day running of the ward in the absence of the ward manage Promote effective communication within the nursing team, to patients, carers, visitors, members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies. Receiving and reporting sensitive information, as appropriate, taking into account rules of confidentiality.

Service Management

To assist, when necessary, with the definition of nursing standards and maintain the provision and effectiveness of those standards in line with clinical governance. The post holder will ensure that they are aware of all issues relating to Clinical governance, Quality assurance and Clinical Effectiveness and that they carry out their duties in accordance with these frameworks and standards.

Education

To help to create and maintain an environment conducive to development and learning for all staff. To assist in identifying the need for and providing training/education in clinical nursing and managerial techniques to all grades of staff.

Excellent communication skills are paramount as you will be liaising with a wide range of departments from within the Trust and with other cardiac centres within the cardiac network. You will play a key role in orchestrating safe and effective movement into and out of the ward to ensure effective flow of patients throughout the Trust.

This role will require an enthusiastic individual with the ability to multitask, provide support to other members of the team and deliver excellent patient care. As Milton Keynes University Hospital is a teaching hospital you are also expected to be a role model to our student nurses, nursing associates and medical students. You will be expected to Maintain a % compliance with mandatory training and to adhere to all hospital policies including the uniform policy.
