We are looking for a Principal Engineer with a background in Electrical/Mechanical Systems Engineering to help shape the future of flight. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise/input and validation towards project development teams. They will be the key pillar leading the development and integration of technical solutions compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements, within agreed program, schedule, and manufacturing constraints. Additionally the role enables subject matter expertise consultation, outside of immediate development programs, alongside the systems engineering technical authority.

This is a very exciting and potentially career defining opportunity. You will be a leading member of the team embarking on a significant and challenging technology development project. This four year project will be a major steppingstone towards achieving the next generation of avionics for customer Tilt-Rotors.

The project will operate from our GKN facilities in Cowes, Isle of Wight and there is the requirement to be flexible with International travel within Europe and to U.S. (approximately every two months). We offer hybrid working, the opportunity to work from home up to two days per week dependent on the needs of the business.

For this opportunity we will provide a relocation support package to the Isle of Wight, for the successful applicant.

Job Accountabilities

Quality of design deliverables created by the GKN Defence - Systems Engineering team
Qualification arguments and submissions for GKN Defence, avionic, control systems / sub-systems
Maintaining closed loop FRACAS program (Failure Reporting, Analysis, Corrective Action System)
Release of stakeholder and customer technical communications
Technical guidance for program planning objectives
Define best practice guidance for systems engineering excellence
Mentoring, coaching and development training and initiatives for systems engineering team
Technology development submissions to GKN defence systems roadmap and technology incubator

Profile description:

What You'll Bring

To help us make a difference, youll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Specific Technical Experience

HNC, degree or equivalent experience in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering
Demonstrable experience delivering designs for electro-mechanical, sensing OR controller systems within an engineering environment
Experience in a leading / approval role for systems design
Proven design and delivery of high quality and reliable systems in a complex regulatory environment (e.g. MIL-STD, TUV cert, etc)
Proven track record (minimum 2 projects), in compliance planning and governance of verification & validation analysis for product release
Advanced experience of the Systems Development Lifecycle process
Advanced experience of requirement decomposition and tools (e.g. DOORS)
Intermediate experience defining system / modular architecture

Technical leadership - Ability to mentor, coach and develop functional & cross functional team members.
Confident presenting technical information to a wider audience including senior stakeholders and external customers
Industry innovator - Set the vision for the next generation of products and working methods. You hunt for exponential improvement
Build the culture of Plan-Do-Check-Act and continuous improvement
Hands-on approach Have a real desire to be up close to the components and people that build our systems.
Desirable:

Previously held signatory responsibility (systems design; safety design), within aviation industry
Working experience delivering system designs using MBSE toolbox (e.g. SysML)
Demonstrate commercial awareness; supporting leadership with make/buy decisions and creating technical packages to initiate new supplier bids & contracts
Experience in safety assessment software/toolbox FTA and FMEA (e.g. ANSYS Medini, Isograph)
Proficiency in multi-domain modelling/simulation packages (e.g. MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Amesim)
