Firmware/Hardware Integration IVVQ Engineer - Cheadle/Stockport

Within the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) domain at Thales UK the Systems Integration and Test (SI&T) organisation play a key role in supporting the development, integration, design proving, installation and acceptance activities associated with maritime sensor technologies and combat system integration on Royal Naval ships, submarines and aircraft. Building on 50 years of experience in undersea warfare, Thales is now a global leader in underwater systems and the world’s top exporter of sonars and related systems for naval forces.

As part of this role you will join the SI&T team working across a number of high profile Submarine projects where you will you to undertake the following key responsibilities conducted across all phases of the project lifecycle (from design to delivery).

Key responsibilities

Work as a member of a system integration and test team to deliver high quality, robust hardware and software solutions that meets customer requirements, on time and within budget. Develop test and trials strategies, write and conduct associated test procedures and document test results. Support the integration between Inboard and Outboard equipment and between Thales and third party equipment Support the wider Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification activities required to introduce MMS system solutions into service. Support Customer Acceptance activities prior to offsite delivery Support our systems by working with customer support functions to ensure that currently deployed hardware and software products are maintained on both land and at sea and suppliers have been adequately trained. Support the execution of development and integration trials de-risking activities in support of MMS programs and the introduction of new technologies. Support Platform activities, as required, including Installation, Setting to Work (STW), Naval Weapon Harbour Trials (NWHT) and Sea Acceptance Trials (SAT), Defect Rectification and Maintenance activities on board platforms.

Skills and experience

System Engineering

An understanding of the Systems Engineering Lifecycle An understanding of Integration, Verification, Validation & Qualification (IVVQ) An awareness of the requirements management and its application to IVVQ. Experience in mapping requirements to test activities Experience in generating test plans and associated test procedures Experience in the conduct, reporting and the collation of ‘sell off’ evidence during test campaigns

Hardware Engineering

Experience working with analogue and digital electronics, both at high and low voltage Experience in the integration of COTS and bespoke equipment utilising differing interface types (Serial, optical, electrical) An understanding of how Hardware, Firmware (FPGA) and Software are integrated and the use of state machine analysis Experience in the use of a wide range of Test equipment (Fluke, Optical Power meter, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analysers)

Platform Experience

Experience of working in Naval Dockyards Knowledge of common acoustic surface ship or submarine sensors (Sonar, Echo Sounder, Side Scanner, Conductively Temperature Depth (CTD), Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), Command System). Experience of Installation, Setting to Work (STW) and Acceptance process on-board Maritime Platforms. Experience in the conduct of platform trials and the required processes to ensure they are conducted safely and the required data is captured

Tools

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products to generate and update technical documentation Experience of fault reporting tools such as JIRA Experience of requirement capture tools such as DOORS

Soft Skills and Tools

Strong written and verbal communication skills An ability to work as a key member of the team A methodical and structured approach to problem investigation

Qualifications and Certification:

Technical Degree/HND/HNC or equivalent in Electrical & Electronic or Mechanical Engineering. Three years or greater experience in an equivalent role or transferable knowledge and experience from relevant underpinning roles e.g. Systems/Hardware/Firmware/Software engineering. Full UK Driving License.
