POSITION SUMMARY:

We are looking for a motivated Engineer to join the Test Development team, focusing on chassis systems and structure testing. In this role, you'll manage a variety of projects, from investigating component failures to overseeing multi-vehicle test and sign-off programs, ensuring supplier components meet installation guidelines. You will lead test activities, including planning, procurement, execution, and results analysis, while providing technical support and guidance to the team. Ideal candidates will have experience in automotive or similar engineering fields, with a strong understanding of vehicle systems such as driveline, air, and structural testing. A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience is preferred, along with the ability to work independently, travel for testing, and meet project deadlines.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

The role is one where you need to beproactive, showinginitiateandownershipof the projects under your management. Seek solutions to technical issues by using internal and external resources, pulling these resources together and managing the solutions. Work closely with the T&D Principal Engineer whilst offering guidance and support to the other T&D Engineers in the department and across the AD sites. You will be expected to develop basic project plans that meet the business requirements. Ability to take a situation and give clear route and guidance, create concise documentation that defines the issues and shows clear path and actions to achieve resolutions. Your role will focus on leading test activities thorough managing and procurement of parts, vehicle, or rig test build/modification, conducting the tests, results analysis and report writing. You will use your engineering skills to apply the right instrumentation and data logging systems, arranging test facilities, internal or external, whilst providing technical expertise and guidance to the T&D team in completing the tests. You must ensure that tests are technically fit for purpose, objective, conclusive and were necessary meet appropriate legislation or supplier sign off criteria. Ensuring that the test work is carried out correctly by clear instruction to the T&D technicians, giving clear test definition and work instructions. Working from company project plans, you will plan the test element detail. Organise and book internal and external resources to deliver the test work to the required project milestones. Whilst the role is office based you will spend a high proportion of your time in the workshop or away at proving grounds instructing staff on the test work required, both in the UK and overseas. Carrying out vehicle/rig inspections, operation, and test execution.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

Ideally your work experience will be gained in the automotive industry and in particular; bus, coach, HGV, specialist vehicles or tier-1 suppliers. A basic knowledge on CAN based systems for both vehicle and data acquisition. We would also welcome those from mobile plant, rail and rolling stock, aerospace, marine, or other similarly complex engineering environments. You should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding and ideally experience of bus and or commercial vehicle systems; in particular: Drive line systems (Mech & Electrical), air systems, structural testing and supplier sign off testing. Your core vehicle test and development experience should include: Vehicle test environment Experience with instrumentation types and application. Ability learn and use laptop-based data logger software and diagnostic tools. Vehicle/drive line construction, commissioning, and use. Guide T&D Technicians on the work required and tests to perform. Highly technical and a hands-on approach, including workshop skills. Able and willing to question established methods, research and propose suitable alternatives. A PCV driving license would be desirable. Alongside your core technical skills, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support colleagues on multiple simultaneous projects. Furthermore, you will be flexible and willing to adapt to changing requirements. You will be comfortable working unsupervised, under your own initiative and often under pressure to meet deadlines. As such you will have the ability to problem solve and resolve issues in a speedy and thorough manner. You will be IT literate, being comfortable with Microsoft packages, as well as data analysis software. An understanding of various CAD packages is a benefit. Due to the nature of the role and our testing procedures, you will be required to travel and spend time at test facilities and customer sites from time to time in the UK and occasionally overseas.
