We are looking for a Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business. This engineering role is an important part of a once in a lifetime major infrastructure programme replacing the current facilities on a Nuclear Licensed Site with modern state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities. This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to ensure that the C&I aspects of our new high-hazard facilities are designed and implemented to a suitably high-standard.

Our Submarines Business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems for the Royal Navy's submarine fleet. We support the Royal Navy as the Technical Authority for all UK Naval Reactor Submarine Plants, and we're continuing to build our nuclear sector capability to support the development of a new nuclear plant for future submarines.

For you, this means unique opportunities to shape the future of the Submarines Business.

The purpose of this role is to support the entirety of the bespoke C&I facility design from requirements capture and initial concept development through to commissioning and handover to operations. This will require the ability to ensure that designs are safe and conform to relevant UK legislation as well as liaising with both internal/external supply chains and design partners as an intelligent customer.

This the role will involve working with both internal personnel and those in the supply chain. This includes our design partner who will be undertaking the detailed design at the component/programming level.

We are proud to be a force for progress, powering, protecting and connecting people everywhere.

We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future and we need people like you to come and join us on this journey.

We'll provide an environment of caring and belonging where you can be yourself. An inclusive, innovative culture that invests in you, gives you access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.

What we offer:

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It's a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we're all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:
Ensuring that facility designs are safe and conform to relevant legislation.

Providing C&I support for the entirety of the design lifecycle for new bespoke factory systems, facilities, process plant and machines to achieve an integrated engineering solution.

Acting as an intelligent customer for C&I matters arising in the supply chain and with our design partners. Ensuring that their proposals satisfy design intent and comply with relevant regulations, safety standard and legislation.

Support facilitating commonality of C&I artifacts, principles and standards across the entire project.

Authoring of technical reports to a professional standard.

Extraction, creation and maintenance of technical requirements and associated verification & validation activities for C&I equipment.

Ensuring that the C&I solutions optimally meet all project and technical, including safety, requirements.

Working with the project management team to ensure that schedules, risks, costs and resource requirements are understood and maintained.

What we are looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles. Some specific attributes for the role are:
Be a professionally qualified engineer at degree level (or equivalent experience) in Electrical, Electronic, Controls or C&I Systems Engineering, or related discipline.

Be a Chartered Engineer or hold an affiliate/associate membership of a relevant professional body or be working towards Chartered/Incorporated status.

Be experienced in designing bespoke safety critical products and systems.

Have awareness of safety critical development constraints and relevant safety standards (e.g. IEC 60880, IEC 61508, etc).

Have a good understanding of the design lifecycle from initial scoping through to delivery.

The ability to produce clear, concise and accurate technical reports.

An appreciation of control system network architecture on large factory systems.

Have experience of designing the C&I aspects of process plants and/or factory equipment.

Have experience of design within the nuclear, oil & gas, pharmaceutical or chemical processing industries.

The above attributes are desirable and it is recognised that it is unlikely to find a candidate that satisfies all of them. To that effect, if a candidate satisfies some but not all of the above, they should still apply.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We're committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving. We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we'll be. By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone who works at Rolls-Royce the opportunity to realise their full potential.

You can learn more about our global Inclusion strategy at Our people | Rolls-Royce.

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines business, an individual has to hold a Security Check clearance. Rolls-Royce will support your application for Security Clearance if you do not currently already have this in place.

Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets we can only progress applications from individuals who are a UK national or, in MoD approved cases, a dual national.

How Many Space Industry Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a UK Space Job?

If you’re pursuing a career in the space industry — whether that’s spacecraft engineering, mission operations, space software, satellite systems, ground segment integration or space data analytics — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of tools, platforms and technologies mentioned in job adverts. One role wants experience with CAD and FEA software. Another asks for experience with GNSS simulation. A third mentions mission scheduling tools, RF link analysis suites, Python, C++, continuous integration — and it seems there’s always another acronym to learn. With so much listed, many candidates fall into the trap of thinking they must master every tool under the sun before they’ll be taken seriously. Here’s the honest truth most UK space hiring managers won’t say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you’ve heard of every tool — they hire you because you can apply the right tools to solve real space problems, explain your reasoning clearly, and deliver results. Tools matter, but they always serve a purpose: achieving mission goals, improving reliability, reducing risk, delivering data, or enabling collaboration. Tools are enablers — not trophies. So how many tools do you actually need to know to get a space job? The answer is much fewer and far more strategic than you might think. This article breaks down: what tools employers really expect which ones are core across most space roles which ones are role-specific how to present your tool proficiency on your CV and in interviews

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Space Sector Job Applications (UK Guide)

The space industry is one of the most exciting and multidisciplinary sectors in technology and engineering today. Whether you’re applying for roles in spacecraft design, aerospace systems, robotics, satellite communications, mission operations, payload engineering, space software, ground systems, or scientific research, your application must quickly show hiring managers that you are relevant, technically credible and ready to deliver. In the UK space jobs market — spanning organisations from startups to defence primes, agencies, research labs and commercial constellations — hiring managers do not read every word of your CV. They scan applications rapidly, often making a judgement about whether to read further within the first 10–20 seconds. This guide breaks down exactly what hiring managers look for first in space sector applications, how they assess CVs and portfolios, why specific signals matter, and how you can position your experience to stand out on www.ukspacejobs.co.uk .

The Skills Gap in UK Space Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

The UK space sector is one of the most exciting and fastest-growing high-tech industries in the world. From Earth observation and satellite communications to space robotics, launch systems and deep-space exploration, the breadth of opportunity is enormous. The UK Government’s ambition to capture a significant share of the global space economy has driven investment, policy support and a wave of innovative companies — both established and start-up. Yet despite strong academic programmes and a pipeline of graduates with relevant degrees, employers in the UK space sector consistently report a persistent problem: Many graduates are not prepared for real-world space industry jobs. This is not a matter of intelligence or motivation. Rather, it reflects a growing skills gap between what universities are teaching and what employers actually need from space professionals. In this article, we’ll explore why that gap exists, what universities are doing well, where they fall short, what employers want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build thriving careers in the UK space sector.
